    Vick takes class in respect for animals
    Michael Vick was attentive and inquisitive during an eight-hour class in empathy and animal protection at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals headquarters, a PETA spokesman said Tuesday. Dan Shannon was with the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback for the duration of the class, taught by several PETA staff members. Vick is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 10 on a federal dogfighting conspiracy conviction. He also has been indicted on state dogfighting charges. -- read full article

    Bengals place LB Marshall on IR (AP)
    The Bengals placed linebacker Lemar Marshall on injured reserve Tuesday, a day after he tore the Achilles' tendon in his left leg during a 34-13 loss to New England. The Bengals replaced him by claiming linebacker Corey Mays off waivers from New England. The second-year player appeared in eight games for the Patriots last season, and was placed on waivers before Monday night's game. -- read full article

    The San Francisco 49ers shook up their struggling offense on Tuesday, waiving No. 3 receiver Taylor Jacobs and re-signing Bryan Gilmore, who held the same position last year. Jacobs beat out Gilmore for a roster spot with an outstanding performance in training camp, even moving ahead of free-agent signee Ashley Lelie on the 49ers' depth chart. -- read full article

    Vick not expected in court Wednesday (AP)

    Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick arrives  with his attorney Billy Martin, right, at federal court in Richmond, Va., Monday, Aug. 27, 2007. Vick's attorney's will appear in Surry County court Wednesday where he faces further charges relating to dog fighting.


    Michael Vick apologized for his immaturity and said he was ashamed and disappointed in himself when he pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges. Then he enlisted one of his biggest detractors to prove it. Vick accepted the offer of Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, to take a PETA course in empathy and animal protection.

    Henry has MRI, Walker day-to-day
    Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry had an MRI exam on his right knee and right ankle Monday after being injured at Indianapolis. Henry's status and that of other injured players won't be known until later this week. Henry ran for 121 yards in the Broncos' 38-20 loss to the Colts on Sunday before leaving the game cringing after an unspecified injury.     Jenkins not backing down from comments
    Kris Jenkins started being concerned about his team's effort a few weeks ago. The Carolina Panthers defensive tackle then decided he couldn't wait any longer to address it.     Williams applies for reinstatement
    Suspended running back Ricky Williams applied for NFL reinstatement Monday, his agent said. "Ricky is extremely excited about the prospect of playing in the NFL again," Leigh Steinberg said. Williams has played in only 12 NFL games since the start of the 2004 season, but rushed for 3,225 yards in 2002-03. His current suspension began in April 2006 after he violated the league's drug policy for the fourth time. He tested positive for marijuana this April, again delaying his return. -- read full article
